| National Council About the National Council UNA-USA’s National Council, chaired by former President Jimmy Carter, reinforces the nationwide advocacy and outreach efforts of UNA-USA. The Council’s members are leading citizens committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter and to a strong US-UN relationship. Sharing their experience and knowledge with both local and national audiences, National Council members reach students, professionals, political and civic leaders, NGO activists, members of the media, and a diverse range of other citizens. Under the leadership of Vice-Chair Gillian Sorensen, who is former UN Assistant Secretary-General for External Affairs, National Council members build new constituencies and engage audiences on a variety of UN-related issues. Many of them write op-ed pieces for local and national papers, speak on news outlets, teach courses on UN issues, and use speaking engagements to raise public awareness of the importance of the UN to US national interests.
National Council members’ significant expertise serves to enrich any dialogue of which they are a part, and thanks to their dedication and continuous outreach work, the circle of citizens engaged in UN issues is constantly expanding.
National Council Resources The Website Resource Guide for UN Issues is a comprehensive compilation intended to facilitate National Council members' efforts to inform the American public about the importance of the UN's work and the nature of the United States' relationship with the UN.
